Bueu, 31 July 2026 – The Bueu International Film Festival will bring together professionals from around the world to decide the awards of its 19th edition, which will distribute nearly €5,000 in prizes.
The Bueu International Film Festival (FICBUEU), which will hold its nineteenth edition from 4 to 19 September, will feature a remarkable international representation among this year’s juries. The Official Jury and the Discoveries Jury will bring together six leading professionals from the fields of filmmaking, production, programming, editing, research and film criticism to decide the awards of an edition that will distribute nearly €5,000 in prizes.
The Official Jury will be made up of three figures with extensive experience in the field of short films and international film festivals. Argentinian Magdalena Arau, a programmer at BAFICI since 2016, university lecturer and audiovisual project consultant, brings experience spanning film programming, education and participation as a jury member at festivals and development funds in different countries, making her one of the most respected voices in the Latin American film landscape.
Joining her will be Iranian filmmaker, programmer and photographer Amir Masoud Soheili, director of short films screened at festivals such as Tallinn Black Nights, Leeds and Interfilm Berlin, and a member of programming teams at festivals across Asia, Europe and Africa. His career combines audiovisual creation with the international promotion of independent cinema.
Completing the Official Jury is Portuguese Miguel Dias, founder and director of Curtas Vila do Conde and director of Agência da Curta Metragem. For more than three decades, he has played a key role in promoting the distribution and production of Portuguese short films, while also developing an extensive career as a film programmer and curator.
Discoveries Jury: three perspectives on contemporary cinema
The Discoveries Jury will consist of producer Silvia Fuentes, editor and filmmaker Laura Piñeiro, and researcher and film critic Aarón Rodríguez Serrano, three complementary profiles representing different ways of understanding contemporary cinema.
As producer and founder of Sétima, Silvia Fuentes has been behind some of the most acclaimed recent Galician films, including As liñas descontinuas and Filmei paxaros voando.
Laura Piñeiro works as a film editor and filmmaker within the Galician independent cinema scene. She is also a member of the programming teams of the Mostra Internacional de Cinema Etnográfico and the Intersección Festival.
Completing this jury, Aarón Rodríguez Serrano is Professor of Audiovisual Narrative at Universitat Jaume I, a researcher specialising in film analysis and the author of numerous reference publications on contemporary cinema. He combines his academic work with film criticism and script consultancy.
The Official Jury will be responsible for awarding the FICBUEU Prize, as well as the Best Galician Short Film and Best Spanish Short Film awards. Meanwhile, the Discoveries Jury will select the winning films in the Discoveries, GZ_00 and International Schools categories, completing an awards list that will also include the Audience Award and the prizes presented in the educational sections. It is also worth noting that the Spanish Film Academy has included FICBUEU in its official list of qualifying festivals for the Goya Awards in the categories of Best Fiction Short Film, Best Documentary Short Film and Best Animated Short Film.
With the appointment of these two juries, FICBUEU reinforces its international vocation and its commitment to a plural perspective on contemporary audiovisual creation, bringing together in Bueu professionals from different countries and sectors of the film industry to assess a selection of the finest short films on today’s international scene.
