The jury of the Schools Section will choose the winning short films of the FICBUEU 2022

FICBUEU

A total of 86 films from centers in Galicia were presented for the 15th edition of the festival, with a large number of pieces from Secondary Education.

The jury of the Schools Section of the 15th edition of the Bueu International Film Festival met today to select, from among the 15 finalist works, the three winners of the corresponding categories (Special, Early Childhood and Primary Education, Secondary Education and Schools of Image and Sound and Faculties), in addition to the winner in the International Schools section.

The Schools Jury for the present edition of the FICBUEU

After a first pre-selection by the FICBUEU team, which was in charge of choosing up to five pieces per category from among the 86 works received for the Galician Schools, now it will be the turn of the three people who make up this year’s Schools Jury, who has the final decision.

This jury, made up of the writer and editor Olalla González, the pedagogue, teacher and researcher specializing in cinema at USC Álvaro Dosil, and the producer, director of animated films and teacher Sergio Clavero, will be responsible for choosing the works winners who will be announced during the Galician Schools Gala, in which the Fundación Novas and Kalandraka collaborate.

A decision that will surely not be easy, taking into account that the number of works was similar to that received in previous years and that their quality and variety is more than remarkable. Almost half (42) correspond to Secondary Education centers, while in the case of Special, Infant and Primary Education and Image and Sound Schools and Faculties the number was similar (23 and 21, respectively).

These figures show not only the great participation and commitment of students and schools, but also the potential of audiovisual and cinema as a tool for work, learning and transmission of values, premises under which the MiniFIC was created. The finalist shorts are the following:

Best Short Film for Special, Early Childhood and Primary Education:

  • A coroa da raíña – CEIP Plurilingüe San Marcos (Abegondo)
  • Carolina e o corvo de ás brancas – CEIP Do Hío (Cangas)
  • Mergullo nas rías – CEIP Do Carballal (Marín)
  • Oso atrapabolboretas – CEIP Plurilingüe A Pedra (Bueu)
  • Salvar a carballeira – CRA Amencer (San Paio)

Best Secondary Education Short Film:

  • Cores – IES As Barxas (Moaña)
  • Migrando – IES Praia Barraña (Boiro)
  • Non tes prezo – CPI Eusebio Lorenzo Baleirón (Dodro)
  • Psicología semanal – IES Terra de Trasancos (Narón)
  • Que van dicir de nós – CPI Alcalde Xosé Pichel (Coristanco)

Best Short Film of Image and Sound Schools and Faculties:

  • Algas negras – IES Audiovisual de Vigo
  • Galleria. Never hug the fence – Escola de Imaxe e Son de Vigo-EISV.

On the other hand, this jury will also be the one that will designate the Best Short Film of the International Schools Section, after the FICBUEU team chose the 6 best pieces sent in recent months. The finalists in this section are the following:

Fruto do vosso ventre – Fábio Silva (Portugal)
Yi Yi – Giselle Lin (Singapur)
Fall of the Ibis king – Mikai Geronimo, Josh O’Caoimh (Irlanda)
Joy – Alexandra Brodski (Reino Unido)
An ostrich told me the world is fake and I think I believe it – Lachlan Pendragon (Australia)
Es muss – Jumana Issa, Flavio Luca Marano (Suíza)

The winning short films in the categories of Secondary Education and Special, Early Childhood and Primary Education will be announced during the Galician Schools Gala, which will be held on September 23 at 11:30 am. On the other hand, the award-winning pieces of the International Schools and Galician Schools and Faculties Section will be announced during a ceremony that will take place on Monday, September 19 at 1:30 p.m. Both events will have free admission.

After the return to normality later the several years marked by the situation derived from the health crisis, the FICBUEU continues with the progression of past editions and presents a new format that goes beyond the festival, with the clear objective of adding value the projects carried out during the months before and after the event.

Another novel initiative is the creation of the FICBUEU Channel, separated into the YouTube and Twitch accounts. In the first of them you can find videos of activities carried out by the organization throughout the year, as well as pieces related to the festival, such as interviews with various guests of this edition. On the other hand, in the Twitch channel various activities will be broadcast live.

The FICBUEU Monographs arrive at the Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente de Elche

FICBUEU

Severiano Casalderrey presents the two essays published to date at one of the most popular festivals on the peninsula.

After the colloquium, the programming included a screening of some of the best Galician shorts that passed through the FICBUEU.

The FICBUEU was present during the celebration of the 45th Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente de Elche as a guest festival. The representative was Severiano Casalderrey, author of the Monographs and one of the FICBUEU programming managers, who brought the short format to Alicante on July 7, one day before the start of the festival that will end on the 22nd of the same month.

Poster of the 45th edition of the Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente de Elche

Casalderrey had the opportunity to present the FICBUEU Monographs project in an interesting colloquium that began at 8:00 p.m. and ended with the screening of some of the most outstanding Galician short films that have passed through the FICBUEU, such as ‘Homeless Home’ by Alberto Vázquez, ‘Carne’ by Camila Kater, ‘Augas Abisais’ by Xacio Baño, ‘Xoves de Comadres’ by Noemi Chantada and ‘Matria’ by Álvaro Gago.

During the conference, the situation and context of Galician cinema were discussed. In addition, various periods in the history of the short film were also discussed, especially the French Nouvelle Vague and the National Film Board of Canada, protagonists of the two books published to date.

The FICBUEU Monographs project was born in 2020 and is the result of all the selection and research work carried out for the FICBUEU Retrospective Section, for which it is necessary to carry out extensive documentation work, as well as to view a significant number of films.

In this 2022 edition, the ‘FICBUEU#3 Monograph’ will be presented, dedicated to the Institute of Researchers and Cinematographic Experiences (IIEC) and the later Official School of Cinematography (EOC), focusing for the first time on Spanish cinema and emphasizing the period from 1947 to 1976.

The first two books can be found in the FICBUEU online store for all those interested, while the third of them will be available after its official presentation.

FICBUEU and Juan XXIII Association record the short film ‘A fin do osíxeno’

FICBUEU

Both institutions have been working on the movie since January through the film workshops of the FICBUEU Social Area.

The film will premiere on September 11 during the opening day of the festival.

The team from the Social Area of the FICBUEU and the Juan XXIII Association of Cangas, an occupational center for people with intellectual disabilities, recorded a short film as a result of long work in one of the film workshops, which began last January.

During these months, the users of the center learned everything related to the process of creating an audiovisual piece, starting from the creation of the story and the script and ending with the entire preparation and production process prior to filming.

Various members of the team during filming in Aldan.

Therefore, all that was needed was to put everything learned into practice during the filming. The session lasted approximately nine hours. Twenty people participated in it, among whom were well-known actresses and actors such as Mónica Caamaño or Lois Soaxe.

All the work has been carried out by members of the center from different towns in Pontevedra, such as Cangas, Moaña and Bueu, although they had the support of the Juan XXIII monitors and the FICBUEU team.

The environmental-themed fiction short film is entitled ‘A fin do osíxeno’ and was recorded in different locations, such as the Association’s own headquarters or the castle of the forest of Aldan.

The final result, still with a lot to work on in the editing and post-production section, will be premiered during the opening day of the Bueu International Film Festival, which will take place on September 11.

This is the second film of the 2021/22 academic year launched through the short film workshops of the FICBUEU Social Area, after the one made in conjunction with the Association Érguete from Vigo, in an initiative that seeks to bring cinema closer to groups and sectors further away from audiovisual creation.

Once premiered, the work can be seen on the festival’s YouTube channel, where most of the works carried out so far can be found.

The FICBUEU will screen a session of short films at Ambienta, the International LGBTIQA+ Film Festival in Pontevedra

FICBUEU

One more year the FICBUEU will be responsible for the section ‘Ambienta en curta’.

The screening will take place on July 1 in the Plaza de la Pedreira in Pontevedra.

The Bueu International Film Festival will once again bring the short format closer to Ambienta, the Pontevedra LGBTIQA+ International Film Festival. It will be in the ‘Ambienta en curta’ section, where you can see five pieces that show the different realities of the groups and that will contribute to the dissemination of cinema for diversity, the main objective of the event.

The session will take place on the last day of the exhibition, on Friday, July 1 at 10:30 p.m. in an open-air space such as Plaza de la Pedreira in Pontevedra. Previously there will be a closing act with music related to the cinema by Palito Dj. Admission will be free until the available forum is full.

Programación FICBUEU - AMBIENTA EN CURTA

The program will include titles known to the FICBUEU audience, since two of the works that can be seen in this ‘Ambienta en curta’, such as “Dustin”, by Naïlla Guiguet, and “Son of Sodom”, by Theo Montoya, participated in the 2021 International Section, with “Dustin” taking the awards for Best Music and Best Sound. The other titles that will be screened are “Ensom Cowgirl” by Gina Kippenbroeck, “Victoria” by Daniel Toledo and “Marlon Brando” by Vicent Tilanus.

Still from “Dustin

Although the FICBUEU will be in charge of putting the finishing touch to this year’s Ambienta on July 1, the different acts of the exhibition will begin on June 27. In this way, this edition will have three other screening sections.

On the one hand, ‘Ambienta Actual’, a selection that delves into contemporary society and its course through screenings of the titles “A primeira morte de Joana”, by Cristiane Oliveira, and “ÉTÉ 85” , by François Ozon, organized by Avante LGBT+.

On the other hand, there will be the ‘Ambienta Doc’ section, a proposal made with the participation of the Pedro Zerolo Cinematheque and which brings together documentary pieces that explore the different ways of representing groups, such as Borja Lynch’s work “Triángulos rosas”.

Finally, there will also be a look at the past with the ‘Ambienta Clásica’, in which important titles are recovered that help to discover the presence of the group in the history of cinema, such as “Tokyo Godfathers” by Satoshi Kon and Shôgo Furuya , and which will be organized by the Cineclube de Pontevedra.

In addition to the different sessions, the program of the exhibition also includes the presentation of a video clip made by Laura Cadenas Amandi, Enzo Sarmiento and Éric Dopazo, a meeting with the actress, politician and trans activist Carla Antonelli, who will also present the documentary “Triángulos rosas”, and a closing musical act by Palito Dj.

It will be the second year that the Concello de Pontevedra has carried out the exhibition under the name Ambienta, which since its inception had FICBUEU as one of its collaborating entities. The entire program of the event can be consulted on the Ambienta.gal website.

The third edition of the Rías Baixas Film Fest, the label that brings together FICBUEU and seven other festivals in the province, is presented

FICBUEU

This is the third year in which the main film festivals in Pontevedra are united under the same brand created by the Diputación de Pontevedra.

In addition to FICBUEU, the Rías Baixas Film Fest also includes other seven events.

The Diputación de Pontevedra has presented the new edition of the Rías Baixas Film Fest, a label that for the third consecutive year will bring together the most important film festivals in the province. This brand was born with the intention of giving them greater projection and strength, while at the same time trying to contribute to the dissemination of local and galician culture, according to the Diputación de Pontevedra.

This year’s programme was presented at an event that took place outside the headquarters of the Diputación in Vigo, with the presence of representatives of all the festivals and some public officials, such as the president of the Diputación, Carmela Silva. There, and through a video summary of all the participating festivals, the names and dates of the different events were announced.

The first to be held will be the Play-Doc International Documentary Film Festival in Tuy (from 4 to 8 May) and the Cans Festival in Porriño (from 18 to 21). After these first two events, in September it will be the turn of the Primavera do Cine Festival in Vigo (from 6 to 11), the FICBUEU – Bueu International Film Festival (from 11 to 24) and the Galicia Freaky Film Festival in Vigo (from 23 September to 1 October).

In October, the Vigo Inclusive Film Festival will take place (from 18 to 22) and the Curtas, Festival do Imaxinario de Villagarcía de Arosa (from 21 to 30), leaving the final in the hands of the Novos Cinemas International Film Festival of Pontevedra, which will put the finishing touch to this year’s programme of the Rías Baixas Film Fest between 13 and 18 December.

Manuel Pena, director of FICBUEU, also spoke at the event, highlighting the diversity of the profiles of the festivals in the province and the character of the non-profit associations behind each one, motivated in his words by “the passion for cinema and culture”.

On the other hand, the director of FICBUEU wanted to have a few words to value the efforts of all those involved in the world of culture, while highlighting “the importance and the dimension to which the film festival programmes have reached”, stressing that they go far beyond the screenings by including other initiatives such as workshops or activities that promote culture, being ambitious for the future and trusting in the growth of the different projects in the area.

After him, the director of programming of the Primavera do Cine Festival, Ana Gontad, took the floor, who wanted to highlight not only the seventh art and the importance of festivals, especially now that it seems that we are beginning to emerge from the health situation that put everything on hold a little over two years ago.

Gontad also made a plea for the recovery of the free space for cinema, describing it as “a victory for collective sensitivity” in the face of “totalitarian, xenophobic, sexist and liberal ideologies that challenge the inclusive democratic coexistence that we have worked so hard to build”.

Finally, the presentation was brought to a close by the president of the Diputación de Pontevedra, Carmela Silva, who speaks accompanied by Victoria Alonso, director of the area of Culture. Silva wanted to highlight the work of all the participating festivals, while commenting on the richness that this type of cultural event brings to each municipality and the province.

Silva also affirmed that “these festivals allow people to have different views, as the world of cinema has the capacity to create new visions of the world” and that, in turn, these events translate into “hope for the future”, as he commented that these types of celebrations fill the towns with life and bring culture closer to the people.

After this, the event ended with an humorous film scene starring the president herself, putting the finishing touch to the presentation of the Rías Baixas Film Fest 2022.
