Specialists from Chile, Italia and Madrid evaluate in Bueu the works of the festival

Specialists from Chile, Italia and Madrid gather this weekend in Bueu to spend two days watching the films of the International Section of the FICBUEU, which will celebrate its twelfth edition between 10 and 19 September. Carolina Astudillo, Chilean filmmaker and professor; the Italian director Carlo Sironi and Carlos Reviriego, journalist and programmer of the Filmoteca Española, will be responsible for selecting the winning works of the Gold Amphora, the Silver Amphora and the eleven technical awards of the International Short Film Festival. Regarding the Best Galician, Spanish and Experimental short films, there will be a different jury, as well as for the school awards.

Carlos Reviriego coordinated the cinema section of El Cultural and was editor-in-chief of Cahiers du cinéma en España, serving nowadays on the Editorial Board of Caimán Cuadernos de Cine. He gives lessons of Contemporary Cinema and Criticism in diverse university centres. Reviriego wrote the essay Elogio de la distancia. Dos miradas a un territorio and collaborated in numerous collective books. He is part of the selection team of the Festival Mapfre 4+1 and DocumentaMadrid, as well as a film programmer of the German Film Festival and the Filmoteca Española.

Carolina Astudillo’s research and creation work has women and historical memory as its articulating axis, oscillating her audiovisual works between experimental and documentary cinema. With her first full-length films, El gran vuelo y Ainhoa, ya no soy esa, she won numerous awards, such two Biznagas de Plata at the Málaga Festival. Her shorts were also shown and awarded in national and international competitions. As a professor, she gives courses and conferences in Spanish and Lationamerican centres. 

Carlo Sironi began his film career in the cinematography field and then he started directing. His short films were awarded in Venecia, Locarno, Torino, etc. At the same time, his projects have been selected to participate in film development workshops in Cannes, Sundance or the Berlinale. Sironi’s first full-length film, Sole, was nominated for the David de Donatello Awards and was prizewinning at the European Film Awards.

Registration for the workshops about script and shooting plan is open

  • People interested in these training actions must submit their scripts before 31 July.

The registration period for the two training actions to be held during the FICBUEU 2021 will be open until 31 July. These activities are a script development workshop, mentored by AGAG, and a shooting planning workshop, given by CREA. Four projects will be selected in order to participate in each training, which will take place on 12 and 11 September respectively.

In both cases, candidates must submit an unfilmed script. People from Galicia or settled in our Autonomous Community can apply. Scripts set in Galicia or dealing with Galician issues will also be accepted. However, the works can address any topic and each participant will be able to send as many texts as they want. Scripts shall be written in a professional format and have a maximum duration of 30 minutes.

The French-Chinese co-production ‘Fleur de pavot’ wins the Golden Amphora

  • Olla get the Silver Amphora, The Present received the Audience Award, Ca nostra was the Best Spanish Short Film and Carne the Galician one.

The French-Chinese co-production Fleur de pavot, by Baer Xiao, won the 13th Bueu International Short Film Festival by getting hold of the Gold Amphora, as well as the prize for Best Cinematography. The Silver Amphora went to the French short Olla, directed by Ariane Labed, who also get the prize for Best Costume. The Palestinian film The Present, by Farah Nabulsi, received the appreciated Audience Award, while the R Award for Best Galician Short Film went to Camila Kater’s Carne, and the Novas Foundation Award for Best Spanish Short Film went to Laia Foguet’s Ca nostra. Genius loci, by French director Adrien Merigeau, won the prize for Best Experimental Short Film.

Regarding technical and artistic prizes, the CREA Award for Best Director went to Lithuanian Laurynas Bareiša for Atkūrimas. Another French short film, Massacre by Maïté Sonnet, won two prizes: Best Screenplay and Best Editing, and a pair went to Sweden’s Något att minnas as well: Best Art Direction and Best Music. Highly acclaimed by the audience were the Best Actor award for Øyvind Brandtzæg, because of his role in The Manila Lover, (Norway/Philippines), and Best Actress one for Anna’s main character (Ukraine/UK/Israel), Svetlana Barandich. Best Sound was won by the Greek short All the Fires the Fire and Best Makeup and Hairdressing by the Albanian-French co-production The van.

Best Make Up / Hairdressing: Sarah Pariset e Wilfried Pirrin for The Van (France/Albania).

Best School Short Film: É o meu aniversario, CEIP Plurilingüe A Pedra (Bueu).
Best High School Short Film: Vida furtiva, IES Terra de Trasancos (Narón).
Best Universities and Colleges Short Film: Fermata, Facultade de Ciencias Sociais e da Comunicación da Universidade de Vigo (Pontevedra).
Best International School Short Film: Avant notre heure by Chloé Terren, La Fémis (Francia).
