A total of 40 centers participate this academic year in the “Cinema with Perspective” program

FICBUEU
  • The program aims to educate in the identification and treatment of sexist stereotypes present in audiovisual narratives.
  • Participating students will also have the opportunity to create a simple audiovisual production with a gender perspective.

The Consellería de Cultura, Educación, FP e Universidades (Xunta de Galicia) published last month the resolution of selected centers to participate in this academic year in the program “Cinema with Perspective,” developed in collaboration with the cultural association FICBUEU.

The program, aimed at students in 5th and 6th grade of Primary Education and 1st and 2nd year of Secondary Education, aims to educate in the identification and treatment of sexist stereotypes present in the narrative of cinema and other forms of audiovisual expression. Likewise, participating students will be able to create a product (script, shooting plan, etc.) to stage a simple audiovisual production with a gender perspective.

The program will take place throughout the second and third trimesters of the 2023/24 academic year and is divided into two different activities. The first one consists of the screening of short films with gender equality themes, which aims to promote among students reflection on the role of women in society, gender violence, and inequalities. Once the screening is finished, a colloquium will be held, moderated and directed by an expert, who will seek to stimulate the reflective and analytical capacity of the students regarding the values and hidden messages regarding equality present in the films.

The second activity is an educational workshop for the creation of a simple audiovisual production. In each participating educational center, an audiovisual production with gender equality themes will be developed, whether it be a short film, an advertising spot, a music video, or an interview, among other formats. The plot and staging will reflect content about the meaning of equality and equity between women and men, stereotypes and gender roles, or women’s empowerment, from a didactic perspective that allows students to understand the reality of this situation from the perspective of a social process under construction and positive change.

The initiative is part of the Galician Strategy for School Coexistence, which considers the effective achievement of equality of rights and opportunities between women and men and equality of treatment and non-discrimination against individuals based on their sexual orientation as one of its principles.

The FICBUEU Residency awards €15,000 for the production of one of the participating projects.

FICBUEU

“Sismes” by Jordi Sanz Angrill is the winning script of this first edition of the program.

Bueu, December 7, 2023 — The International Film Festival of Bueu continues to develop initiatives beyond the competition that not only promote the visibility and appreciation of the short film format but also encourage its creation and development.

Short Film Promotion

With this goal in mind, in October 2023, the organization carried out a new project, the I FICBUEU Residency, which is already one of the main activities it undertakes. The program hosted four filmmakers on the Island of Ons for a week, whose short film projects were selected from over 100 proposals. Galicians Alicia Úbeda and Ángela Andrada, Canarian Pablo Vilas, and Catalan Jordi Sanz Angrill were the participants in this first edition aimed at improving their projects.

To support one of the short films throughout its creation process, the festival included in the guidelines of the I FICBUEU Residency a prize for the production of the participating scripts valued at €15,000. After their stay on the Bueu island, the residents had the opportunity to apply what they had learned in numerous tutorials and specific training sessions led by professionals, completing the rewriting of their projects. It was during the month of November when the organization analyzed each of the proposals and their evolution to make a final decision, in which Isabel Peña, scriptwriter, and tutor during the residency, also participated.

Jordi Sanz Angrill
Winning project

Sismes, the first winning project of the FICBUEU Residency

The organization announced today the resolution of the prize for its first edition of the FICBUEU Residency, which was chosen from the four participating projects and was awarded to Sismes, by Jordi Sanz Angrill and co-written with David Junyent. Sismes is the story of Mila (35) who, months after the mysterious departure of her ex-husband, returns to the volcanic island where they honeymooned – which she recorded with a video camera – and becomes obsessed with recording herself to recreate the supposed counter-shots of the images from the trip, in which only her ex-husband appears. The protagonist seeks not only to relive her past but also to unite and manipulate these images from different times to create a new narrative, a new memory.

The project, which according to its creator represents “an exploration of the malleability and mechanisms of memories and memory,” will be produced by the Galician production company Nortecatro Cinema and the Catalan Shoji Films during the year 2024.

FICBUEU in 2024

At this moment, the organization is already working on the 17th edition of the International Film Festival of Bueu and the next edition of the FICBUEU Residency, which will take place in September and October 2024, respectively. The call for participation in the short film competition will open next December and will extend until April, while registrations for the residency can be made in spring.

In addition to the competition and the training program, FICBUEU works throughout the year to bring short films to the general public, children, and groups at risk of exclusion both in its environment and through international collaborations.

The residents of ITA BERDUCIDO create a short documentary with the support of the FICBUEU team

FICBUEU

The group has been working on the film since March through the film workshops of the FICBUEU Social Area.

In 2016, the Bueu festival carried out the creation of the FICBUEU Social Area, through which it directs its work towards disadvantaged or at-risk-of-exclusion groups, using cinema as a therapeutic, educational, visibility-enhancing, and integrating tool. This line has been in operation for eight years already, during which workshops and screening sessions were developed with numerous institutions such as the Príncipe Felipe Center, the Gypsy Secretariat Foundation of Vigo, ADICAM (Association of Diagnosed Breast Cancer Patients of Cangas), Xuntos Association for Down Syndrome in Pontevedra, or the Con Eles Association of Vilagarcía.

Last year, the Érguete Vigo and Juan XXIII Center in Cangas collectives were the beneficiaries of the activity, resulting in, on one hand, the short film titled “Sabía que vendrías”, in which actresses Arantxa Treus and Rocío Romero participated; and on the other hand, a science fiction and comedy piece called “A fin do osíxeno”, featuring actresses Mónica Caamaño, Anabel Budiño, and Sé Rial, actor Lois Soaxe, and Peter Punk as the main character.

In 2023, thel FICBUEU team developed a new short film creation workshop in collaboration with ITA Berducido for a period of two months, thanks to the funding from Obra Social La Caixa and Simei Global Consulting. On this occasion, the participants chose to create a documentary about Nieves Loperena, a resident of Gaxate (A Lama) and popularly known as “Tía Ni” (Auntie Ni).

In 2008, Nieves created “Mercado de la Tía Ni,” a bookshop and antique shop that also functions as a cultural space and meeting point, where she organizes various activities including talks, concerts, and flea markets. The location of Mercado de la Tía Ni is an old schoolhouse built in Castro de Gaxate, surrounded by a native forest area. During the summer months, there are hammocks and outdoor reading areas, as well as nighttime projections.

Ita Verducido Área Social FICBUEU

Near this location is ITA Berducido, where the participants of this short film workshop reside. It is a centre that provides a residential therapeutic program for teenagers with diverse behavioural issues. Over these months, six residents of the centre learned everything related to the process of creating an audiovisual piece through the different workshop sessions. They started with the initial idea and the script, went through preparation and pre-production, and concluded with the filming and subsequent editing of the film. All this behind-the-scenes work was carried out by the group members, with the support of ITA Berducido staff and three professionals from the FICBUEU team.

The final result, still in the process of editing and post-production, will premiere during the opening day of the 16th edition of the Bueu International Film Festival, which will take place on September 9th. The event will be attended by both the creators of the documentary, the protagonist, and the teaching team.

The film will be available to watch on the YouTube FICBUEU Channel, where the pieces created in the workshops of recent years, as well as other materials related to the festival and its activities, can be found.

The initiative aims to promote the short films of (LA)HORDE, an artistic collective founded in 2013 by Marine Brutti, Jonathan Debrouwer and Arthur Harel.

Leading the Ballet National de Marseille since September 2019, this collective creates choreographic works, films, video installations, and performances, with the moving body as the central focus of their work. Through the interaction and juxtaposition of different mediums, they develop scenarios and actions that address radically contemporary themes and issues.

The session, with an approximate duration of 45 minutes, will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium of MARCO in Vigo, with an introductory presentation by the FICBUEU team, providing an overview of the collective’s trajectory and body of work.

GHOSTS: a short film by (LA)HORDE with the National Ballet of Marseille, soundtrack by Rone and screenplay by Spike Jonze, filmed at the Palais Longchamp in Marseille. When the Museum of Fine Arts closes, the figures take over the deserted place, embracing and tearing each other apart, as if they wanted to reclaim their bodies… until they encounter the night guard.

A ROOM WITH A VIEW: in this music video, (LA)HORDE continues to explore ways of protesting and rebelling through dance. The video and motion capture allow the representation of the unimaginable, questioning physical relationships with the group with more violence and strangeness through possible collapses.

CULTES: this film captures a specific moment of the manifestation of worship, which translates into ritualized practices, behaviours, collective ecstasy, and mass consumption. Is the body, its excitement and celebration the stronghold for this mass consumption? Can this state transcend the uncritical space in which it unfolds?

NOVACÈRIES: a combination of film, performance, and homemade video that transcends dance films, presenting a choreographic and metaphysical portrait of the post-industrial world by reinterpreting post-internet dance.

The choice of (LA)HORDE as the protagonist for this screening is due to both the quality of their work and the regular presence of their short films in the Discoveries Section of the festival in recent editions. In September 2023, FICBUEU will celebrate its 16th edition from September 9th to 23rd, bringing a series of screenings and activities related to international cinema to Bueu once again.

Bueu International Film Festival presents the first edition of the FICBUEU Residency

FICBUEU

The FICBUEU Residency establishes itself as a new space for creation and training that will take place in October on the Island of Ons

Bueu, May 22, 2023FICBUEU announced today the first edition of its new initiative, a residency for filmmakers that will be held from October 9th to 15th on the Island of Ons. It is a training program dedicated to the comprehensive treatment of short films in their development stage, in which different prestigious professionals will personally accompany and mentor each project.

As highlighted by the organization, this program “comes as a result of the new phase that started with the 15th anniversary of the festival. A phase in which the organization aims to expand its work promoting short films and cinema beyond the dates of the festival.”.

The inaugural edition of the FICBUEU Residency will be mentored by renowned screenwriter Isabel Peña, who holds a degree in Audiovisual Communication from the University of Navarra and specialized in Screenwriting from ESCAC. She received the Goya Award in 2019 and the Feroz Award in 2019 for the screenplay of the film “El reino” (2018), as well as the Goya Award in 2023 and the Medal of the Circle of Film Writers in 2023 for the feature film “As bestas” (2022). She is also co-writer of films such as “Stockholm” (2013) and “Que Dios nos perdone” (2016), for which she won the Jury Award for Best Screenplay at the San Sebastián Film Festival.

Throughout a week, Peña will conduct individual sessions with each of the authors for the revision and progress of their works, as well as group meetings to foster synergies and collaborative work.

In addition to individual mentoring and group exchange spaces, the residency will offer residents specific training in areas such as gender perspective in screenwriting (taught by Carmen Ávalos), visual effects from the project’s inception (with Pablo Lamosa from Cormorán VFX), and new distribution models (taught by Elena Neira). This way, the residents will be able to expand their knowledge on different aspects and stages inherent to the full development of their projects.

As the final phase of the I FICBUEU Residency project, the organization will select one of the participating scripts for development, which will be carried out through a collaboration agreement with a Galician production company.

This first edition of the FICBUEU Residency is funded by the Xunta de Galicia, through the General Secretariat for Equality and the Galician Agency for Cultural Industries. At the event, which took place on one of the Nabia boats that will transport the residents to the Ons Island in October, the director of AGADIC, Jacobo Sutil, highlighted “the favourable moment that the Galician audiovisual industry is experiencing” and the “relevance of initiatives like the FICBUEU Residency that support the short film format from the development phase”. Meanwhile, Susana López, the Secretary of Equality, emphasized “the organization’s work in its commitment to equality” as well as “the joint efforts with AGADIC to promote gender perspective in creative endeavours”.

The submission period for proposals is now open and will extend until June 15th. A professional jury will be responsible for evaluating each of the proposals, which will be announced during the 16th edition of FICBUEU in September.

All information and documentation regarding the call for submissions is available on the festival’s website www.ficbueu.com/residency

The I FICBUEU Residency has a grant from Ministerio de Cultura y Deporte and the sponsorship of Xunta de Galicia through the Consellería de Promoción do Emprego e Igualdade and the Consellería de Cultura, Educación, Formación Profesional e Universidades.
