Bueu, 24 August, 2026 – The Bueu International Film Festival celebrates a new edition of Cinema na praia this Friday, 28 August, at Praia de Bueu (Banda do Río), featuring two free open-air short film screenings.
The screenings will be organised in two sessions. The first, at 10:00 pm, will feature films recommended for all audiences, while the second session, at 11:00 pm, will present short films aimed at audiences aged 16 and over.
As usual, FICBUEU will offer free popcorn to attendees, but this time it will do so in collaboration with the Misión Biológica de Galicia (MBG-CSIC), in a partnership that highlights the importance of research into and conservation of native agricultural varieties. The popcorn served during the screenings comes from native Galician varieties studied by the Maize Genetics and Breeding Research Group at the Misión Biológica de Galicia, a CSIC centre specialising in agricultural, forestry and environmental research.
The Maize Genetics and Breeding Research Group is the longest-standing research group at the Misión Biológica de Galicia, where it has been active since 1974. Through its work collecting native Galician varieties, the group contributed to the creation of a Germplasm Bank, also known as a Seed Bank, which currently preserves nearly 250 different maize populations. Today, its research focuses, among other areas, on identifying maize varieties resistant to different biotic stresses and to the effects of climate change, as well as on improving maize for consumption.
For more information, two videos are available explaining what Seed Banks are and the characteristics of popcorn maize:
To enjoy the screenings comfortably, the organisation recommends that audiences bring chairs, blankets, towels or other items to sit on during the beach screenings.
If weather conditions prevent the screenings from taking place on the beach, the activity will be moved to Purro Shipyard.
Cinema na praia will be the prelude to the 19th edition of the Bueu International Film Festival, which will take place from 4 to 19 September.
This activity is supported by the Pontevedra Provincial Council.
