Bueu International Film Festival presents the first edition of the FICBUEU Residency

FICBUEU

The FICBUEU Residency establishes itself as a new space for creation and training that will take place in October on the Island of Ons

Bueu, May 22, 2023FICBUEU announced today the first edition of its new initiative, a residency for filmmakers that will be held from October 9th to 15th on the Island of Ons. It is a training program dedicated to the comprehensive treatment of short films in their development stage, in which different prestigious professionals will personally accompany and mentor each project.

As highlighted by the organization, this program “comes as a result of the new phase that started with the 15th anniversary of the festival. A phase in which the organization aims to expand its work promoting short films and cinema beyond the dates of the festival.”.

The inaugural edition of the FICBUEU Residency will be mentored by renowned screenwriter Isabel Peña, who holds a degree in Audiovisual Communication from the University of Navarra and specialized in Screenwriting from ESCAC. She received the Goya Award in 2019 and the Feroz Award in 2019 for the screenplay of the film “El reino” (2018), as well as the Goya Award in 2023 and the Medal of the Circle of Film Writers in 2023 for the feature film “As bestas” (2022). She is also co-writer of films such as “Stockholm” (2013) and “Que Dios nos perdone” (2016), for which she won the Jury Award for Best Screenplay at the San Sebastián Film Festival.

Throughout a week, Peña will conduct individual sessions with each of the authors for the revision and progress of their works, as well as group meetings to foster synergies and collaborative work.

In addition to individual mentoring and group exchange spaces, the residency will offer residents specific training in areas such as gender perspective in screenwriting (taught by Carmen Ávalos), visual effects from the project’s inception (with Pablo Lamosa from Cormorán VFX), and new distribution models (taught by Elena Neira). This way, the residents will be able to expand their knowledge on different aspects and stages inherent to the full development of their projects.

As the final phase of the I FICBUEU Residency project, the organization will select one of the participating scripts for development, which will be carried out through a collaboration agreement with a Galician production company.

This first edition of the FICBUEU Residency is funded by the Xunta de Galicia, through the General Secretariat for Equality and the Galician Agency for Cultural Industries. At the event, which took place on one of the Nabia boats that will transport the residents to the Ons Island in October, the director of AGADIC, Jacobo Sutil, highlighted “the favourable moment that the Galician audiovisual industry is experiencing” and the “relevance of initiatives like the FICBUEU Residency that support the short film format from the development phase”. Meanwhile, Susana López, the Secretary of Equality, emphasized “the organization’s work in its commitment to equality” as well as “the joint efforts with AGADIC to promote gender perspective in creative endeavours”.

The submission period for proposals is now open and will extend until June 15th. A professional jury will be responsible for evaluating each of the proposals, which will be announced during the 16th edition of FICBUEU in September.

All information and documentation regarding the call for submissions is available on the festival’s website www.ficbueu.com/residency

The bases, available on the website of the contest, contemplate up to five competitive sections (without taking into account the future call for the Galician Schools Section) following the pattern of the previous edition of the contest, which ended another year with great public success.

The deadline for sending short films will remain open until April 15th, which one more year must be done through the Shortfilmdepot platform with a registration fee of 2€. In parallel there will also be five other non-competitive sections: Retrospective, Family Short Films, Kindergarten, Children, Junior. Furthermore, attendees will vote in situ for the acclaimed Audience Award.

The objective of the Bueu International Film Festival is to contribute to the dissemination of cinema, not only by promoting the best short films made in the last year internationally, but also by offering activities related to cinema beyond the event.
The organization is currently working on the configuration of a program that continues along the lines established last year and that will include multiple activities of a cinematographic and cultural nature. The FICBUEU continues with its commitment to sustainable development

FICBUEU

During the 15th edition of the festival and beyond the event, the organization carries out different initiatives related to the 2030 Agenda

Every year the team works on improving these measures and on the implementation of novelties that represent progress towards achieving the SDGs

One of the commitments of the Bueu International Film Festival is to work towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, taking special care when programming activities that are achievable for the whole of society and that all people can enjoy the Proposals under equal conditions, without forgetting those measures that help and promote the conservation of their environment to create a sustainable and supportive event.

Objetivos de desarrollo sostenible de la Agenda 2030 de la ONU

Motivated by these commitments, the organization has been working for several editions taking into account the objectives of the UN 2030 Agenda, focusing especially on several of them:

The first is SDG 2 – Hunger 0, carrying out for the second year and on this occasion throughout the event, a food collection together with the Food Bank of Vigo/Pontevedra (belonging to FESBAL – Spanish Federation of Food Banks). On the other hand, during the projections for educational centers, both organizations developed an awareness session with the youth of Bueu. All the donations obtained during the two weeks of the campaign were given to Cáritas Bueu, in order to generate a close impact.

Similarly, actions were also carried out in favor of quality education, SDG 4, such as the celebration of the Galician Schools Section, as well as different projection sessions for educational centers that were accompanied by didactic units, promoting audiovisual as a method of learning, creation and expression for youth.

Regarding gender equality, SDG 5, the FICBUEU has been implementing initiatives for several editions such as the use of inclusive and non-discriminatory language, the balance in the presence of professionals in different fields (juries, speakers, teachers, festival team , etc.) or collaboration with other festivals or institutions that promote these values, such as the Ambienta Festival – LBTGIQ+ in Pontevedra.

Another of the main values of the organization is to generate quality employment in a stable manner, SDG 8, betting on a continuous work model that does not base its hiring on temporary work and with the aim that outsourced services are local , working with mostly local professionals.

Also in this sense, responsible production and consumption is another of the organization’s commitments throughout the year, continuing with the progressive implementation of circular economy criteria, based on reducing, reusing and recycling, following SDG 12.

In addition to these initiatives in the 2022 edition, both the FICBUEU and the rest of the entities and events that are part of the Sustainable Culture Pact, agreed to carry out a series of specific actions: recognize and eradicate the barriers that prevent universal accessibility to the events, the elimination of 100% of single-use plastics, measuring the CO2 footprint and the identification of stakeholders.

Thus, the presence of single-use plastics was reduced by collaborating with Agua Local and the selective collection of waste was improved by participating in the Composta Morrazo! program, an initiative of the Mancomunidad del Morrazo that in this 15th edition contributed considerably to the reduction of overall volume of waste.

Guests of the FICBUEU 2022 on the route through the Island of Ons

Finally, the FICBUEU also wanted to continue with the sustainable tourism activities of previous years, respecting SDGs 14 and 15, with the creation of a program for the guests of the festival whose purpose is to value the natural resources of the Bueu village.

Within this, there was a guided tour of Cabo Udra, a guided tour of the Ons Island, a tasting of local Galician products (paying special attention to those from responsible consumption, such as those guaranteed by the ‘pescadeRías’ collaborating seal ), a guided tour of the Massó Museum or a trip down the estuary in traditional boats with the Os Galos Association.

Accessibility for everyone

In this FICBUEU 2022 and following the line set in previous editions, accessibility measures were strengthened through the following proposals:

We communicate on our social networks and well in advance of the celebration of the festival everything related to the experience of attending the festival from the point of view of a person with special needs or reduced mobility in order to facilitate their planning.

In this sense, it should be noted that for the first time the festival’s website had a button that facilitates the use of different help tools to consult the contents and programming of the FICBUEU, as well as a ticket sales system both online and in person, attainable and simple for all the public.

On the other hand, the FICBUEU team was available to people with special needs to provide assistance in any situation, offering access and preferential locations.

Another of the organization’s commitments was to have a space without architectural barriers, carrying out all the activities of the 15th edition in fully accessible locations for people with reduced mobility, having ramps and elevators at their disposal.

Beyond the event, promoting an accessible culture is one of the key objectives of the work that the FICBUEU develops throughout the year in the different activities of its Social Area, among which the creation workshops stand out in collaboration with different associations and groups in risk of exclusion. In these programs, users learn to make a short film, going through all the phases of the project and using cinema as a tool for social cohesion, promoting creativity and teamwork. The pieces made in these workshops were premiered during the opening day of the 15th edition of the festival, taking advantage of the occasion to give voice and visibility to these people and their work.

The I Cinema Seminars brought the experiences of different film professionals to Bueu

FICBUEU

This first edition was focused on the treatment of time in the cinema.

The Bueu International Film Festival launched in the 15th edition of this 2022 the new project of the Cinema Seminars, a space for reflection and thought on the art of cinema that brought together in Bueu several professionals from the sector (filmmakers, editors, critics or essayists) in a program centered, on this occasion, on temporality and the role it plays within the cinematographic language.

Under the name ‘I Cinema Seminars: sculpting time‘, a series of activities were carried out that made the audience and all those who followed the event via streaming through the FICBUEU Channel enjoy a special day to the passionate about cinema.

In this way, the person in charge of inaugurating the space was the researcher, essayist and filmmaker José Manuel Mouriño, who is also the representative and coordinator in the Iberian Peninsula and in Latin America of the Andréi Tarkovski International Institute. Mouriño gave a master class on the treatment of time in the work of the Russian filmmaker, considered one of the masters in this aspect within the seventh art.

The morning session closed with a conversation between the film critics of Caimán – Cuadernos de Cine Andrea Morán and Daniela Urzola about different works and filmmakers, analyzing a wide variety of outstanding temporary resources throughout the history of cinema.

During the afternoon, an online round table was held on the rhythm and temporal realities that montage makes possible, moderated by Diana Ramahí. The Chilean director, producer and teacher Carolina Astudillo, the editor Ana Pfaff and the Galician filmmaker and editor Diana Toucedo participated. In the conversation they talked about the usual challenges when working on this aspect.

The penultimate activity featured one of today’s most relevant Galician filmmakers, Oliver Laxe, who participated in a meeting with the journalist Ángel Suanzes. In the talk, Suanzes made Laxe travel through his entire filmography, paying special attention to the evolution of the way in which the director worked this aspect of cinematographic language in each film.

Finally, for the closing of the I FICBUEU Cinema Seminars, the work ‘Zerkalo‘ by Andréi Tarkovski was screened, considered by critics to be one of the most representative pieces by the Russian filmmaker. In fact, the essay ‘Sculpting in time‘ by Tarkovsky is the one that inspired the name of this first edition of a new format that promises even more cinema in the following years.

The French short film ‘L’enfant salamandre’ wins the First Prize for Best Short Film at the closing ceremony of the 15th edition of FICBUEU

FICBUEU

Five other awards were given, in addition to the Galician Cinema Award to Miguel de Lira.

The French short film ‘L’enfant salamandre‘ by Théo Degen was chosen as the winner of the Official Section at the 15th edition of the Bueu International Film Festival, taking the First Prize and an economic amount of 2,000 euros. The Vice Mayor of Bueu Council, Julio Villanueva, was in charge of delivering the award after the announcement made by Luis E. Parés on behalf of the Official Jury. The short tells the story of Florian, a 15-year-old boy who thinks he can communicate with the dead through fire, which makes his neighbors think he’s a freak. One day, by force of being called a monster, he ends up becoming one.

The Second Prize and an amount of 1,000 euros went to the Romanian short film ‘Interfon 15‘ by Andrei Epure, with the award being presented by the Deputy for Tourism and Youth of the Pontevedra Provincial Council, Ana Laura Iglesias. Luis E. Parés, again representing the Official Jury, was in charge of announcing the name of the winning work. ‘Interfon 15’ is about several people who discover an unconscious woman lying in front of her block. Although the woman lives on the third floor, no one knows her name, which leads them to reflect on the life of her neighbor and their own.

María Ruíz-Falcó and Nerea Lores, representing the FICBUEU, were in charge of introducing the Audience Award, which on this occasion went to Dutch production ‘Vlekkeloos‘ by Emma Branderhorst. On the other hand, the Galicia R award for the best Galician work was communicated by Pepe Coira, member of the National Jury, who gave way to the director of the R company, Alfredo Ramos, in charge of making the delivery. In this edition there were two winning pieces ex aequo, ‘Rompente‘ by Eloy Domínguez Serén and ‘El sembrador de estrellas‘ by Lois Patiño. The two recognitions, both that of the Public and the Galicia R, have an economic endowment of 500 euros.

Pepe Coira was also the member of the jury that revealed and gave the award for Best Spanish Short Film of this edition, with a reward of 500 euros, which went to ‘Alopècia Androgènica‘ by Salvador Sunyer, with a Special Mention for ‘Harta‘ by Júlia de Paz. Helena Girón, as part of the Discoveries Jury, was the one who revealed the name of the winning film in the same category, awarded to Stéphanie Lagarde for ‘Minimal sway while starting my way up’ and which received the same financial amount as in the cases previous. In this category there were also two Special Mentions for ‘Anxious Body‘ by Yoriko Mizushiri and ‘Train Again‘ by Peter Tscherkassky.

To finish, the 2022 Galician Cinema Award was also presented at the event to Miguel de Lira, who will reflect on the contest and his own career in an interview with the journalist Gaspar Broullón that can be seen through the FICBUEU Channel.

The short films made in the Social Area and the presentation of the program inaugurate the FICBUEU 2022

FICBUEU

The films made with the associations Érguete and Juan XXIII were the protagonists of the first day

The 15th Bueu International Film Festival began today, Sunday, with an opening ceremony in which the short films made in the workshops carried out in the FICBUEU Social Area throughout the past 2021/2022 academic year were premiered. The presentation of the schedule of activities for this edition completed the opening day of FICBUEU 2022, which will last until the next day 24.

The opening of the festival took place at 7:00 p.m. at the Centro Social do Mar, the main venue of the event, and was attended by representatives of the different collaborating associations and the rest of the institutions that support and sponsor this edition. From the direction of the festival, they wanted to highlight this inaugural act for being “one of the most beautiful days to be able to present all the work done with these associations during the year”.

Two pieces were screened, A fin do osíxeno, made with the Asociación Juan XXIII of Cangas and which had the support of the Pontevedra Provincial Council, and Sabía que vendrías, recorded with the users of Érguete Vigo thanks to the support of the Obra Social LaCaixa. The creators of the shorts were present at the premiere.

The participants and the Juan XXIII team affirmed that they loved “participating in the project because it taught us a lot about commitment and perseverance, as well as teaching what people with disabilities are capable of doing with work and effort”, while for part of Érguete highlighted that “all the work is done by them, the center tries to encourage this type of initiative but the process and the idea is their thing”.

The first of the works, in which members of the Cangas occupational center for people with intellectual disabilities participated, is a fiction that tells the story of a couple of journalists who discover that two scientists are experimenting to end the planet’s oxygen, so they will have to do everything possible to avoid it.

In the second short film, in which Érguete users belonging to the ‘Treatment support housing‘ program were involved, another fictional story is told starring a woman who returns to her hometown after a long period away, showing the sensations that people have who struggle to integrate into society.

After the premiere of the films, the FICBUEU 2022 program was presented, giving way to the screenings and activities that will take place from Monday 12 to Saturday 24.
