FICBUEU

Five other awards were given, in addition to the Galician Cinema Award to Miguel de Lira.

The French short film ‘L’enfant salamandre‘ by Théo Degen was chosen as the winner of the Official Section at the 15th edition of the Bueu International Film Festival, taking the First Prize and an economic amount of 2,000 euros. The Vice Mayor of Bueu Council, Julio Villanueva, was in charge of delivering the award after the announcement made by Luis E. Parés on behalf of the Official Jury. The short tells the story of Florian, a 15-year-old boy who thinks he can communicate with the dead through fire, which makes his neighbors think he’s a freak. One day, by force of being called a monster, he ends up becoming one.

The Second Prize and an amount of 1,000 euros went to the Romanian short film ‘Interfon 15‘ by Andrei Epure, with the award being presented by the Deputy for Tourism and Youth of the Pontevedra Provincial Council, Ana Laura Iglesias. Luis E. Parés, again representing the Official Jury, was in charge of announcing the name of the winning work. ‘Interfon 15’ is about several people who discover an unconscious woman lying in front of her block. Although the woman lives on the third floor, no one knows her name, which leads them to reflect on the life of her neighbor and their own.

María Ruíz-Falcó and Nerea Lores, representing the FICBUEU, were in charge of introducing the Audience Award, which on this occasion went to Dutch production ‘Vlekkeloos‘ by Emma Branderhorst. On the other hand, the Galicia R award for the best Galician work was communicated by Pepe Coira, member of the National Jury, who gave way to the director of the R company, Alfredo Ramos, in charge of making the delivery. In this edition there were two winning pieces ex aequo, ‘Rompente‘ by Eloy Domínguez Serén and ‘El sembrador de estrellas‘ by Lois Patiño. The two recognitions, both that of the Public and the Galicia R, have an economic endowment of 500 euros.

Pepe Coira was also the member of the jury that revealed and gave the award for Best Spanish Short Film of this edition, with a reward of 500 euros, which went to ‘Alopècia Androgènica‘ by Salvador Sunyer, with a Special Mention for ‘Harta‘ by Júlia de Paz. Helena Girón, as part of the Discoveries Jury, was the one who revealed the name of the winning film in the same category, awarded to Stéphanie Lagarde for ‘Minimal sway while starting my way up’ and which received the same financial amount as in the cases previous. In this category there were also two Special Mentions for ‘Anxious Body‘ by Yoriko Mizushiri and ‘Train Again‘ by Peter Tscherkassky.

To finish, the 2022 Galician Cinema Award was also presented at the event to Miguel de Lira, who will reflect on the contest and his own career in an interview with the journalist Gaspar Broullón that can be seen through the FICBUEU Channel.

The short films made in the Social Area and the presentation of the program inaugurate the FICBUEU 2022

FICBUEU

The films made with the associations Érguete and Juan XXIII were the protagonists of the first day

The 15th Bueu International Film Festival began today, Sunday, with an opening ceremony in which the short films made in the workshops carried out in the FICBUEU Social Area throughout the past 2021/2022 academic year were premiered. The presentation of the schedule of activities for this edition completed the opening day of FICBUEU 2022, which will last until the next day 24.

The opening of the festival took place at 7:00 p.m. at the Centro Social do Mar, the main venue of the event, and was attended by representatives of the different collaborating associations and the rest of the institutions that support and sponsor this edition. From the direction of the festival, they wanted to highlight this inaugural act for being “one of the most beautiful days to be able to present all the work done with these associations during the year”.

Two pieces were screened, A fin do osíxeno, made with the Asociación Juan XXIII of Cangas and which had the support of the Pontevedra Provincial Council, and Sabía que vendrías, recorded with the users of Érguete Vigo thanks to the support of the Obra Social LaCaixa. The creators of the shorts were present at the premiere.

The participants and the Juan XXIII team affirmed that they loved “participating in the project because it taught us a lot about commitment and perseverance, as well as teaching what people with disabilities are capable of doing with work and effort”, while for part of Érguete highlighted that “all the work is done by them, the center tries to encourage this type of initiative but the process and the idea is their thing”.

The first of the works, in which members of the Cangas occupational center for people with intellectual disabilities participated, is a fiction that tells the story of a couple of journalists who discover that two scientists are experimenting to end the planet’s oxygen, so they will have to do everything possible to avoid it.

In the second short film, in which Érguete users belonging to the ‘Treatment support housing‘ program were involved, another fictional story is told starring a woman who returns to her hometown after a long period away, showing the sensations that people have who struggle to integrate into society.

Manuel Pena: “The FICBUEU will offer greater enjoyment for the public with less daily load”

FICBUEU

The organization and the collaborating entities presented the program that will take place from September 11 to 24.

The 15th Bueu International Film Festival will offer an extensive program with the screening of more than a hundred short films and the launch of various activities between the September 11 to 24, returning to the usual rhythm after two years marked by pandemic restrictions.

This was stated today at the press conference for the presentation of this 2022 edition, in which, in addition to the organization, various institutions such as the Bueu City Council, the Galician Agency for Cultural Industries of the Xunta de Galicia – AGADIC or the Pontevedra Provincial Council, entities that support the festival together with the ICAA of the Ministry of Culture.

At the event, which could be followed via streaming on the Pontevedra Provincial Council channels as part of the Rías Baixas Film Fest proposal, those present highlighted the importance of restoring normality to cultural events and the influx of the public to them.

The director of the festival, Manuel Pena, wanted to highlight the importance of recovering the full capacity in a special year full of novelties, in which the festival’s program passes to two weeks to give space and time to the different activities, seeking, as he commented, “a greater enjoyment by the public with a lower daily load, without this affecting the programming”.

In this way, the FICBUEU 2022 will be structured in three blocks, with a first week dedicated to short films and a second in which the MiniFIC and the I Cinema Seminars will be held, standing out as one of the main innovations of this edition. About the conference, Pena explained that “these will not be oriented to short films, because they will be oriented to the cinema in general”, seeking to “give greater depth to the analysis and reflection on the art of cinema”.

After him, the director of AGADIC, Jacobo Sutil, took the floor, representing the Xunta de Galicia, who highlighted “the importance of this type of festival, which positions the Galician audiovisual sector at a very favorable time”. The regional representative also took the opportunity to congratulate the FICBUEU for “taking so much care of the programming and thinking about the public” by extending its duration, giving the attendees the opportunity to take advantage of their visit to the town of Bueu.

In keeping with the foregoing, the President of the Pontevedra Provincial Council, Carmela Silva, praised Bueu, defining it as “a beautiful place in which culture is committed”, opining that “it is another of the charms that it has for offer the FICBUEU”. The provincial president also congratulated the organization for the “clear commitment to cinema, to short films and for bringing this programming to neighbors.” Finally, Silva also highlighted “all the work behind it to comply with the requirement of the two-week duration of the project”.

To conclude, the mayor of Bueu, Félix Juncal, took the floor, accompanied by the councilor for culture, Xosé Leal. The local authority took the opportunity to reflect on the opportunities offered by the town, while stressing that the FICBUEU “is one of those projects that allows us to share and live an experience to enjoy”.

The complete program of the FICBUEU can be consulted here. Within it, the activities and projections have different types of entry (free, with cost, invitation, subscriptions, etc.), which can be purchased through the store section of the website or at the box office from September 5th.

The short films of the Instituto de Investigaciones y Experiencias Cinematográficas and the Escuela Oficial de Cinematografía star in FICBUEU MONOGRAPH #3

FICBUEU

The new monograph analyzes the works made in Spanish film schools, on which the Retrospective Section of this 2022 is also based

The Bueu International Film Festival inaugurated the Retrospective Section in 2019, a section dedicated to the most important milestones in the history of short-form cinema through their works. As a result of all the documentation work put in place to create this category, the FICBUEU Monographs project would be born, which are compilation publications parallel to the content of the section.

In the first year, the influence of the Nouvelle Vague and its importance in the subsequent development of this cinematographic trend was analyzed, while last year the focus was on the largest public production company in the world, the National Film Board of Canada, with the participation of Marc Bertrand, one of its producers, at the festival.

In this 15th edition, both the FICBUEU 2022 Retrospective Section and Monograph #3 will focus on Spain, analyzing the pieces made at the Instituto de Investigaciones y Experiencias Cinematográficas and at the Escuela Oficial de Cinematografía between 1947 and 1976, being one of the seeds of current Spanish cinema by giving way to the various filmmakers who reformulated the industry during those years.

Interested parties will be able to attend the screenings of the Retrospective Section free of charge from Monday 12 to Thursday 15 at 5:00 p.m., previously withdrawing the invitation at the box office. With the ticket for these sessions, a copy of the FICBUEU Monograph #3 will be given as a gift.

The book, entitled “The role of the Instituto de Investigaciones y Experiencias Cinematográficas and Escuela Oficial de Cinematografía professional practices in the creation of the new spanish cinema (1947-1956)”, will also be presented by its author, Severiano Casalderrey, during this edition of the FICBUEU. It will be on Saturday 17 at 11 am at the Meeting Point.

The work is published in Galician and English and has the support of the General Secretariat for Language Policy of the Xunta de Galicia since the beginning of this project. Currently, the monographs can be found in public libraries and in various institutions and schools related to cinema. In addition, the monographs are also available for purchase in the FICBUEU online store and during the festival in the physical store.

FICBUEU and the Vigo-Pontevedra Food Bank organize a food collection during the festival

FICBUEU

You can donate during the two weeks that the event will last.

The Bueu International Film Festival and the Vigo-Pontevedra Food Bank announce a new collaboration to carry out a food collection for the 15th edition, which will take place from September 11 to 24.

Different non-perishable products can be donated during the two weeks of the festival at the Centro Social del Mar, the main venue of the event, at the same time as the scheduled activities.

The items that are most often needed are milk, cocoa, cookies, oil and all kinds of preserves, although any donation is welcome. Another class of foods that are very useful in this type of initiative are those that are easy to store, those with a high nutritional density or those that can be consumed without prior preparation, as long as they are healthy.

In this way, and as in past editions, the FICBUEU will try to collaborate in the fight to reduce social inequalities, in line with the values and ideas that identify the organization, continuing and even expanding the work carried out in previous years.

Informative poster extracted from the web midietacojea.com

In 2021, the year this collaboration began, the campaign was carried out only during the screenings of the Panorama Section. On this occasion, the organization extends the collection dates, including visits by schools during the week of the MiniFIC, with the intention of improving and increasing the number of food collected.

The Vigo-Pontevedra Food Bank is one of the 54 organizations that belong to the Spanish Federation of Food Banks (FESBAL), an entity with more than 20 years of experience that aims to fight against hunger, poverty and waste of food through its correct use and distribution, also contributing to improving the environment. Thanks to their work, products are distributed among more than 7,000 charities and more than one million people.

Tickets and subscriptions for the festival, which will be held between the Social Center of the Sea and the Meeting Point from September 11 to 24, are already on sale at www.ficbueu.com/shop. The subscription to the Official Section will have a price of 12 euros and will give access to the five screening sessions that are scheduled from Monday 12 to Friday 16, with the possibility of selecting the time of 7:00 p.m. or 9:00 p.m.

It will also be possible to purchase the individual ticket, with a price of 3 euros, which will give access to a single session of the Official Section or to attend other Sections of the FICBUEU (such as the cases of Discoveries, Galicia R or Spain).

The Discoveries Section will take place on Friday 16 at 5 pm, while the Spain and Galicia R Sections will be held on Saturday 17, the first at 5 pm and the second at 7 pm. In these last two, the public will be able to access the corresponding talks with the filmmakers.

On the other hand, attendance at the Carne Cruda program, which will take place live on Saturday 17 at 12:00, will cost 5 euros, as in past editions.

Activities such as the Opening Ceremony (Sunday 11 at 7 p.m.), the Galician Schools Gala (Friday 23 at 11:30 a.m.), the Family Short Film Section (Friday 23 at 6:30 p.m.) and the projections of the Retrospective Section (from Monday 12 to Thursday 15 at 5:00 p.m.) will be free although it will be necessary to withdraw a previous invitation.

The protagonism of this year’s Retrospective Section falls on the works carried out by the IIEC and the EOC during the years 1947 and 1976, being in the same way the subject treated in the FICBUEU#3 Monograph, which will be given as a gift to all the people who buy the tickets of said Section. Activities such as the presentation of the Monograph (Saturday 17 at 11 am) or the Tulsa concert (Saturday 17 at 10:30 pm) will also have free access.

During the second week, the MiniFIC will be held, starting with the projections of the International Schools and Image and Sound Schools and Faculties Sections on the 19th (at 11 am and 1 pm, respectively). During this day, the corresponding prizes will also be awarded (1:30 p.m.), with all three activities having free access to the public.

From Tuesday the 20th to Thursday the 22nd there will be a closed day, with the screenings of the Kid, Children and Junior Sections, reserved for schools and students. On Friday the 23rd, access to the public will be opened again for activities such as the Galician Schools Gala (11:30 a.m.), in which it will be necessary to withdraw the invitation, the storyboard workshop (4:00 p.m.), the Consertasso na horta (5:00 p.m.) and the Family Short Film Section (6:30 p.m.), in which you will also have to go to the box office to withdraw the invitation.

Same situation that occurs in the I Cinema Seminars (Saturday 24), one of the novelties of this edition, for which the only requirement will be to reserve a place through the web form. The screening of Andrei Tarkovski’s work ‘Zerkalo‘ (9 pm) will be the only paid one, with a price of 3 euros.

Another novelty of this 2022 edition will be the possibility of following some of the FICBUEU activities live through the Twitch channel, which will allow you to be aware of the event telematically.

For those interested in attending the FICBUEU in person, another alternative will be to pick up the tickets at the box office, located in the Centro Social del Mar. This will open from September 5 and until the next day 10, just before the start of the festival, with a schedule from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. During the event, the office will be open one hour before the start of each activity.

In case of doubts with the online store or with the tickets, you can write to the email info@ficbueu.com or contact through the different profiles on social networks (@FICBUEU).

The jury of the Schools Section will choose the winning short films of the FICBUEU 2022

FICBUEU

A total of 86 films from centers in Galicia were presented for the 15th edition of the festival, with a large number of pieces from Secondary Education.

The jury of the Schools Section of the 15th edition of the Bueu International Film Festival met today to select, from among the 15 finalist works, the three winners of the corresponding categories (Special, Early Childhood and Primary Education, Secondary Education and Schools of Image and Sound and Faculties), in addition to the winner in the International Schools section.

The Schools Jury for the present edition of the FICBUEU

After a first pre-selection by the FICBUEU team, which was in charge of choosing up to five pieces per category from among the 86 works received for the Galician Schools, now it will be the turn of the three people who make up this year’s Schools Jury, who has the final decision.

This jury, made up of the writer and editor Olalla González, the pedagogue, teacher and researcher specializing in cinema at USC Álvaro Dosil, and the producer, director of animated films and teacher Sergio Clavero, will be responsible for choosing the works winners who will be announced during the Galician Schools Gala, in which the Fundación Novas and Kalandraka collaborate.

A decision that will surely not be easy, taking into account that the number of works was similar to that received in previous years and that their quality and variety is more than remarkable. Almost half (42) correspond to Secondary Education centers, while in the case of Special, Infant and Primary Education and Image and Sound Schools and Faculties the number was similar (23 and 21, respectively).

These figures show not only the great participation and commitment of students and schools, but also the potential of audiovisual and cinema as a tool for work, learning and transmission of values, premises under which the MiniFIC was created. The finalist shorts are the following:

Best Short Film for Special, Early Childhood and Primary Education:

  • A coroa da raíña – CEIP Plurilingüe San Marcos (Abegondo)
  • Carolina e o corvo de ás brancas – CEIP Do Hío (Cangas)
  • Mergullo nas rías – CEIP Do Carballal (Marín)
  • Oso atrapabolboretas – CEIP Plurilingüe A Pedra (Bueu)
  • Salvar a carballeira – CRA Amencer (San Paio)

Best Secondary Education Short Film:

  • Cores – IES As Barxas (Moaña)
  • Migrando – IES Praia Barraña (Boiro)
  • Non tes prezo – CPI Eusebio Lorenzo Baleirón (Dodro)
  • Psicología semanal – IES Terra de Trasancos (Narón)
  • Que van dicir de nós – CPI Alcalde Xosé Pichel (Coristanco)

Best Short Film of Image and Sound Schools and Faculties:

  • Algas negras – IES Audiovisual de Vigo
  • Galleria. Never hug the fence – Escola de Imaxe e Son de Vigo-EISV.

On the other hand, this jury will also be the one that will designate the Best Short Film of the International Schools Section, after the FICBUEU team chose the 6 best pieces sent in recent months. The finalists in this section are the following:

Fruto do vosso ventre – Fábio Silva (Portugal)
Yi Yi – Giselle Lin (Singapur)
Fall of the Ibis king – Mikai Geronimo, Josh O’Caoimh (Irlanda)
Joy – Alexandra Brodski (Reino Unido)
An ostrich told me the world is fake and I think I believe it – Lachlan Pendragon (Australia)
Es muss – Jumana Issa, Flavio Luca Marano (Suíza)

The winning short films in the categories of Secondary Education and Special, Early Childhood and Primary Education will be announced during the Galician Schools Gala, which will be held on September 23 at 11:30 am. On the other hand, the award-winning pieces of the International Schools and Galician Schools and Faculties Section will be announced during a ceremony that will take place on Monday, September 19 at 1:30 p.m. Both events will have free admission.
